Abstract

In 1986, Newman et al. presented the first reports on ESWL in children. Since then, numerous reports have been published on the efficiency and safety of ESWL in children.
There is an excellent results achieved by ESWL in fragmenting pediatric staghorn calculi and stones 2 cm or smaller. Also, Eswl in pediatric Horseshoe Kidney and Renal Ectopia achieved successful results.
It appears that ESWL is a good initial option for the treatment of most renoureteral calculi in children as it is non invasive and has a high success rate.
No renal parenchymal lesion secondary to ESWL, whatever the lithotripter used, has been reported in children and no change in the glomerular filtration rate of the treated kidney.
ESWL with highly satisfactory free rate, negligible complication, lack of requirement for general anesthesia and non invasive nature can be considered as the first choice therapy for the management of urolithiasis in pediatric age group.
