Abstract This study was carried out to assess the mothers’ knowledge about the care given to rheumatic heart disease children and to determine the effect of rheumatic heart disease on the psychology of the child and his mother. The present study was conducted at the Paediatrics outpatient clinic, Assiut Univemty Hospital. The study was carried out on 100 patients with rheumatic heart disease of whom 12 had heart failure and 30 children who had acute febrile illness (tonsillitis. pharyngitis, acute diarrhoea or bronchitis) as a control group. Their age ranged from 8-14 years. Special questionnaires were prepared for this study. The first is a complete physical examination (Appendix 1) and the second is the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire for the assessment of children and their mothers’ psychology (Appendix 2). The data collection started from May till September 1992. Significantly higher frequency of rheumatic heart disease among children had delayed birth order (2 or more) than control group, meanwhile the frequency of rheumatic heart disease children was significantly higher in large-sized families (more than 4 members) than control group. A crowding index of more than 2 represented 53% in patients with rheumatic heart disease while only it constituted only 30% among control group. The differences were statistically significant. |
