Abstract

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems.Body mass index (BMI), a measurement which compares weight and height, defines people as overweight (pre-obese) if their BMI is between 25 kg/m2 and 30 kg/m2, and obese when it is greater than 30 kg/m2.Obesity is spreading at an alarming rate, not just in developed countries but also in developing countries, where it co-exists with malnutrition. The world Health Organization considers obesity aglobal epidemic and a serious public health problem.Obesity is increasing and reaching epidemic proportions in both developed and developing countries and is affecting not only adults but also children and adolescents. In Egypt, obesity among adults, particularly women, has reached very high proportions in the last few years. In a recent survey by theInternational Obesity Task Force (IOTF), 79.8% of women are overweight and 46.6 % are obese, and the prevalence of overweight(including obesity) was over 25% in pre-school children and 14% in adolescents.
