Abstract The present study is a sociolinguistic exploratory study on the use of the speech act of advice among speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut. Its main objective is to investigate the different strategies of advice giving elnployed by speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut in their daily conversation and the effect of social variables, such as social distance and power, on Egyptian Assiuti Arabic speakers’ choice of advice strategies in certain situations. Moreover, the findings of this study are compared with the findings of other studies conducted on other speech acts in Egyptian Arabic. In this study, a Discourse Colnpletion Test (DCT) form was used to elicit advice in twelve hypothetical situations, where two contextual variables were combined (i.e. social distance and power), from 150 subjects drawn from the final year students at the Faculty of Arts, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt. The findings of the study have showed that speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut used different advice strategies in different situations. Moreover, speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut tend mainly to be direct when advice is given in different situations. This is probably due to solidarity and cohesion that prevail in Assiut community. The findings have also showed that power of the participants as well as social distance between thein greatly influence speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut when choosing the suitable type of advice strategy in a certain situation. This was clear when they used direct or bald-on-record advice strategies with fami liar equals, subordinates and superiors and unfamiliar subordinates and indirect or offrecord advice strategies with unfamiliar equals and superiors. These findings are consistent with Brown and 1.evinson’s ( 1 987) theory of politeness and other studies on other speech acts in Egyptian Arabic in that social distance of the participants and their power greatly influence speakers of Egyptian Arabic used in Assiut when choosing the suitable type of advice strategy in a certain situation. |
