Abstract

Clinicopathological (hematological and biochemical) investigations were performed on 60 horses at EL-Zahraa farm that were divided into two groups – control and diseased groups, 17 horses from the latter group were re-examined after the recovery stage. Moreover, the pathological changes were investigated as well as immunohistopathological studies were determined on various tissues taken from 13 horses died due to strangles disease. The present study recorded many clinicopathological, histopathological and immunohistopathological changes. The diseased group recorded normocytic normochromic anemia, significant leukocytosis, neutrophilia with shift to left and significant increasing in ALT, AST, ALP, total protein, globulin and creatinine values than those of control and recovered groups. Moreover, the sodium level of diseased group was significantly increased than that of control group. The recovered group showed significant lymphocytosis and eosinophilia than those of control and diseased groups respectively. The pathological changes which were recorded in the different examined organs supported our clinicopathological results. This study confirms the presence of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi in the tissues of dead horses using immunoflourescent technique as well as in the nasal swabs in living horses by PCR technique besides the conventional bacteriological isolation and identification.
