Abstract

The red poultry mite, Dermanyssus gallinae, is one of the most
economically deleterious ectoparasites of layer hens worldwide. Chicken
mite infestations are the cause of considerable economic losses , welfare
problems in the poultry production and transmission of some pathogenic
agents.
This study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence and seasonal
variation of poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) among layer chickens
in two layer farms during the period from September 2006 to August 2007.
The first farm located in El-wady village , El-Saff district , Giza
govemorate and the second one Elnakhas village , Zagazeg district , Sharkia
govemorate. The total number of D.gallinae adult and its larval stages was
relatively high during September 2006 (n= 4055 in Giza and n=2570 in
Sharkia) then it decreased gradually during October, November, December
and reached its lowest number (n=1260 in Giza and n=895 in Sharkia)
during January2007. The total number of D.gallinae started to increase
gradually from February 2007 (n= 1695 in Giza and n=1120 in Sharkia) to
reach its maximum value in August 2007 (n=4200 in Giza and n= 3050 in
Sharkia).
