Abstract
This study was carried out in the NICD, Pediatrics Department, Zagazig University. It included 40 asphyxiated neonates and 20 healthy neonates as controls. This study was planned to evaluate cord blood lactate, serum lactate within 24 hours of life and CSF lactate as predictors of severity of perinatal asphyxia.
All the studied neonates were subjected to: 1- Full history taking to exclude maternal disease, or drug exposure and to calculate the approximate gestational age by date of last menestrual period or according to maternal U.S.
2- Assessment of Apgar score at 5 minutes. 3- Clinical neurological examination to detect patients with HIE and to detect its stage according to Sarnat score.4- Investigations including cord blood lactate and gases, second reading for serum lactate ill first 24 hours oflife, CSF lactate, Blood Ca, Na, K and Glucose level.
5- Cranial U.S. and C.T for asphyxiated neonates.
