Abstract

The objective of this work is to investigate the use of some Egyptian agriculture wastes ”low grade cotton (LGC), rice husk (RH), and pith bagasse (PB)” for cleaning of oil contaminated wastewater. LGC, RH and PB are considered as agriculture wastes in Egypt. The physical properties of agricultural wastes were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to show the inner and the outer surface and the cross section area.
Experiments were carried out on low grade cotton, rice husk & pith bagasse to study oil removal and sorption capacity under simulated adsorption process using Western Desert crude oil. Different factors were varied to study their effect on the oil removal and sorption capacity including initial oil concentration, flow rate, bed height and (bed compression in case of LGC). Fabricated apparatus was designed for cleaning of oil contaminated wastewater, which consists of feed tank equipped with drain valve and external stirrer, centrifugal pump, piping, plexiglas filtration column equipped with multi-holes distributer at the top, circulation valve, calibrated U-tube manometer and stainless steel basket to contain the bed sorbent material.
Although many studies described in the published literature investigated bed capacity calculation for treatment of oil/water emulsion in batch process, this study was carried out In continuous process using fixed bed filtration process.
The capacity ofthe bed was calculated depending on software ”Graph, Version 4.3” which used in area under the curve calculation.
It was found that the best conditions for low grade cotton were for initial oil concentration of (699.2 mg j L), flow rate (0.328 L j min), bed height (3 Cm) and bed compression is (50 KgjCm2) at constant temperature 250Cusing Western Desert crude oil which gives oil removal (82.7 %) & bed capacity equivalent to (80,01 mg/g).
The best conditions for rice husk were for initial oil concentration of (761.2 mg j L), flow rate (0.328 Lj min) and bed height (2.5Cm) at constant temperature 25°C using Western Desert crude oil which gives oil removal (91.4 %) and adsorption capacity equivalent to (220.77 mgjg).
Also it was found that the best conditions for pith bagasse were for initial oil concentration of (731.8 mg j L), flow rate (0.328 L j min) and bed height (5 Cm) at constant temperature 25°C using Western Desert crude oil which gives oil removal (90.1 %) and adsorption capacity equivalent to (1220. 79 mgjg).
