Abstract Historical background By the end of the fourth century A.D, two major actions took place in the humanity annals, the first was the imperial declaration of christianity; in 390-391 A.D, by the edict issued by Theodosius; declaring the christianity as the official religion of the country. After the hostile policy followed by the Roman Emperors against the Copts of Egypt, Diocletian is remembered most of all; for his severe persecution to the christians, known by the great persecution (303-305 A.D); which caused the death of hundreds of christians’. The persecution of christians in Egypt was regarded among the religious policy and the ruler cult of the Roman Emperors². The church of Egypt came to be known as ”the church of the martyrs”, and monasticism had its full flourish; staring by St. Antony in Alexandria. This declaration of christianity had its strong effects on the political, economic, as well as social affairs in the Roman Empire³. |
