Abstract

Biotechnology including genetic markers to detect the genetic signature will be needed to face development food security. Asuccessful research program that uses biotechnology to solve industry problems must also have a strong research program in the traditional disciplines because biotechnology is only a set of research tools that are used to address research problem areas (1-5).It is important to study aquatic organism’s biodiversity especially in fishes because they are the only major human food source that is primarily harvested from wild populations (6). Therefore, methods for the development of populations’ management guidelines follow often more closely those commonly used for wildlife compared to domestic animals, such as fishes and plants (7). Research into the genetics, selection and hybridization of African catfish in Egypt was initiated in year 2000 only (8) because little information was available on the basis of genetic parameters and fish improvement of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus Catfish (family Clariidae) is a commercially important fish which is distributed allover the world. It has over 100 representative species native to most of Africa and Southeastern Asia (9). Due to their hardiness and adaptability, they were also introduced to many other regions, like Europe, Florida or even Hawaii. This fish was farmed in a number of African, Asian and European countries (10). The African catfish is also an important object for biological research. It has been used extensively for genome manipulation experiments: gynogenesis (11-13) and androgenesis 14.
