Abstract Many factors must be taken into account when selecting the material of construction of a component for a particular application. Such factors include physical and mechanical properties, workability, COlTosion resistance, and cost. Many alloys have been developed to resist corrosion; however, the use of these materials may not be practical from the standpoint of cost, based on the specific application Using paints or other coating materials, less-expensive materials having the requisite physical and mechanical properties can be employed, although they do not have the required corrosion ~ The first few chapters of this thesis (Chapters 1 through 4) provide background infOlmation on ~)~e principles of corrosion and the theory of cathodic protection, as well as the importance of ’,:fUrface preparation. (Chapters 5 through 7) address coating types and components, painting !’tailures, coatings inspection and control. The remaining chapters (chapters 8 & 9) present the e study for approved marine coatings and codes of classification & regulations. |
