Abstract

in the recent years, there has been a wide interest in the regional analgesic
techniques for the management of acute postoperative pain and the amelioration of stress response to surgery, with avoidance of the complications of systemic analgesia.the aim of the present study was to demonstrate the efficacy of continuous bilateral paravertebral versus epidural analgesia combined with general anesthesia on
some hemodynamics, pulmonary functions, some stress hormones and pain relief in
major abdominal vascular surgery.
the present study was approved by the local ethics committee of alexandria
main university hospital and an informed written consent was obtained from all participating patients. the study was carried out on 40 patients of both sexes, who were scheduled for elective major abdominal vascular surgery. patients were randomly classified into two equal groups, according to the analgesic technique. group a (20 patients) received bilateral paravertebral analgesia
with a loading dose of 12.5 ml of bupivacaine 0.5% to each catheter. group b (20 patients) received epidural analgesia with a loading dose of 17 ml of bupivacaine 0.25% .
