المستخلص SUMMARY Yemen Arab Republic, as a developing country, is interested in the role which has been played by woman of rural areas in the development of thenew society. This governmental main concern came as result of the fact that woman in Arab Republic of Yemen represents more than fifty percent of the whole popu:lationof the republic. In addition the situation is aggravated by thousands of men who emi.q rat.ed in order to earn their living outside the country. This situation necessarily emphasized the role played by woman of rural areas in developing the society. consequently, woman is considered as an effective, important and positive factor in the economic and social aspects of development. The yemeni government encourages woman, in general , and woman of rural areas, in particular, to participate positively in the process of production and agricultural development. As a matter of fact agricultural sector in Arab Republic of Yemen occupies an important.and well outstanding position among other economic sectors of the economy. This came as a result of its effective share participation in the National Income. It also represents the sole and unique source of work and production for more than 90 percent of the whole population of Yamen. - I~~ 2 The main objective of this research is to highlight the role has been played by woman of rural areas in the process of agricultural development in Arab Republic of Yemen. This research is a scientific trial to refect some necessary recommendations in order to improve the situation of woman in rural areas. This does not mean necessarily that negative aspects will be ignored. As a scientific role, this research will be neutral in this concern. The main chapters of this research are: Introduction, Agricultural development in Yemen Arab Republic. The role assigned to woman of rural areas in agricultural production in the presence and absence of family man. In order to accomplish the main objectives of this research, both quantitative and qualitative methods were used. Induction was used as a qualitative research method while deduction was used as a quantitative research method. F-test, Chi-square, Analysis of variance. Regression and correlation. percentages and Avarages were used in the statistical analysis of this research. Research saaple was taken from Taaz· and Ebb governorates. This because it was found, according to 3 the census of the country carried out in 1986 , that in these two mentioned governorates the highest the highest percentages of Yemeni women working in Agriculture. They represent about 40.17% of all women working in agriculture according to 1986 Yemen population census. There were some other reasons for taking the research sample from Taaz and Ebb governorates. These two governorates are.considered the important ones in agriculture because of their good climate and natural conditions. In these two governorates, women are playing the most distinguished and important activities in agricultrual activities. In addition to the previous reasons for taking the research sample from Taaz and Ebb, some other reasons are also important. Agricultural labor forces are ainly woman majority. emigration in these two governorates was very high. The researcher herself has had a very good experience in working with the people there for about four years as a research assistant, Department of program Evaluation, Southern Mountain project. This experience provided the researcher with good background concerning the existing traditions and norms there. The main variables used in this research were: age, education, maritual status, agricultural land ownership, ten agricultural procedures to study woman’s participation in plant production including: 4 1 and preparation, cultivation process, crop services, harvest, packaging, and some variables related to woman I S participation in animal production animal husbandry, animal milking) in the presence and absence of family man. The relationship between the degree of womanI s participation in agricultural production and some economic, personal, and social factors was studied. The relationship between the degree of woman’s participation in the previously mentioned plant agricultural procedures and size of land, income ( in the presencel non presence of family man) was also studied in this research. It was found that the highest degree of woman’s participation in plant production was in crop harvesting. In animal husbandry and milking, it was found that woman’s degree of participation was low in the presene of family man(66.7%l, while it was higher in his absence (85.7%). It was found also, from the results obtained from this research, that there is a relationship between the degree of woman’s participation in plant production procedures and each of size of land ownership, and income( in the presence/absence of family man). |
