Abstract Tobacco smoking is a major public health problem that causes millions of pre-mature deaths in the world. It includes more than 4,000 different constituents including carcinogenic and toxic materials. About 5,000,000 people die annually from tobacco related illness; this number is expected to increase by more than a double in 2030. WHO reported in 1995 that there were 1.1bollion smokers less than 15 years of age, representing 29% of the global population? Kuwait studies conducted on epidemiology and prevalence of smoking has been restricted to specific groups as physicians, university students and married couples it was 38.1% among physicians, 30% among male students, 37% among married men and 0.5% among married females. The aims of the study are to detect the prevalence of respiratory symptoms, and to identify personal characteristics and the smoking behavior among current smokers and smokers attending smoking cessation clinics in Kuwait. |
