SUMMARY
- A total number of 77 animals of both sexes of cattle and buffalo calves and lambs were used in this study. Of them 44 animals of male and female buffalo and cattle calves their age varied from 1 week to 8 months, the remaining animals (33) were lambs aged 1month to 4 months.
- The animals were divided into groups as follow:
1) Buffalo and cattle calves: 44 animals (28 of male and female cattle calves and 16 of male buffalo calves). 22 of these animals (14 of male and female cattle calves and 8 male buffalo calves) were healthy and in a good condition. The clinical and laboratory examination of these animals proved that they were free from any diseases and they were used as control group. The rest of the animals (22 male and female cattle calves and 8 from male buffalo calves) suffered illthrift and Nutritional Muscular dystrophy. Some of them showed emaciation, rough hair coat and diarrhea, others showed lameness, myopathy and trembling in the muscles of the limbs, neck and intercostal muscles. Some of the diseased animals were recumbent, unable to move or stand and others were only able to stand for short periods.
2 Lambs group: composed of 33 lambs, of which 15 male and female lambs were healthy and in a good condition, and the clinical and laboratory examination proved that they were free from any diseases and they were used as control group. The rest of lambs (18 lambs) suffered illthrift and Nutritional Muscular dystrophy. Some of them showed emaciation, rough wool and diarrhea, others showed weakness associated with lameness, reluctant to move, myopathy in muscles of the limbs, neck and the intercostal muscles, arching of the back and inability to stand only for short periods.
- This study aimed to threw a light on the clinical status showed by
calves and lambs suffering illthrift and myopathy.
- Detection of the levels of vitamin E and selenium in the serum of
healthy calves and lambs as well as calves and lambs suffering from
myopathy and illthriftness in some areas related to Assiut Governorate.
Also studying some biochemical changes associated with illthrift and
myopathy in calves and lambs (aspartate amino transeferase (AST),
alanine amino transeferase (ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)).
- Biochemical analysis of blood serum revealed significant reduction in
levels of selenium and vitamin E in buffalo and cattle calves as well as
lambs which suffering illthriftness and nutritional muscular dystrophy.
There were a significant elevation in the activity of blood serum of AST,
ALT and LDH of the diseased calves and lambs.
- Biochemical analysis of the specific enzymes of muscle degeneration
confirms the diagnosis of nutritional muscular dystrophy and helps in
monitoring the progress of the case.
- The routine administration of vitamin E and selenium preparations to
newly born calves and lambs is a recommended practice.
