Abstract The present work was performed to get benefit of the recent stereological techniques to examine the aging changes in some hippocampal structural features with expected functional implications. The hippocampus was chosen as a cortical model due to the simplicity of its structures which makes it easy to detect structural alterations associated with aging. The body weights of each animal of four groups of albino rat were recorded at 2,5,12 and 24 months of age . the animals were then killed by intracardial perfusion of 2.5% cacodylate buffered gluteraldehyde. Total brain , forebrain and specimens were processed and embedded in Epon. Toludine blue semithin sections were prepared. Stereological procedures were employed to determine hippocampal volume and neuronal density estimates . the data was then analysed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) procedure. |
