Abstract This study is an experimental investigation on the relation-ship between the machining process, the tool performance and the cutting parameters under which the operation is conducted. An indexable multi-coated carbide inserts are used to face mill alloy steel(56NICRMOV7) using ahorizontal milling machine which is modified to perform aface milling operation. Aface mill cutter containing asingle insert(fly cutter) is mounted directly to aspecial stub arbor on the machine spindle so as to replace the arbor of the horizontal milling machine. Asymmetrical cut milling mode is obtained by the coincidence of the center of the cutter with that of the workpiece. The cutting parameters are selected to cover areasonably wide range of practical requirement as well as, to produce amarked and readable levels of variability in the machining responses. The measured machining responses include the flank wear on different sites of tool’s flank and the corresponding force components as recorded by athree-component piezoelectric dynamometer. |
