Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a common metabolic disorder that affects the peripheral as well as the central nervous system. It increases the risk of central nervous system disorders such as stroke, seizures, dementia and cognitive impairment.
Hyperglycemia due to diabetes mellitus leads to oxidative stress in the central nervous system. Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative changes in the hippocampus, cortex, cerebellum, brain stem and spinal cord. So, hyperglycemia plays a critical role in the development and progression of diabetic neuropathy.
Gabapentin is used to treat diabetic neuropathy. It reduces pain in peripheral neuropathy, including diabetic neuropathy. Gabapentin has been shown to be neuroprotective in animals.
The present study was conducted to focus on the effect of gabapentin on the cerebellar cortex in diabetic adult male albino rats based on histological and histochemical study.
