Abstract Aim of the work To detect “G1n110Arg” genetic variant of IL-13 gene on chromosome 5q31 (replacement of Arginine by glutamine at position 110 of the mature protein) in asthmatic children and its relation to serum IgE level, serum IL-13 level, peripheral eosinophils count (PEC) and clinical presentation of asthma. Conclusion We conclude that the IL-13 has a central role in the prognosis of asthma. The mutation G1n110Arg of IL-13 gene on chromosome 5q31 has linkage to asthma in children. Also we conclude that the G1n110Arg variant in asthmatic patients may be play a role in increase the IL-13 serum level and the severity of the disease but had no role in IgE production. Also there is no difference of occurrence of the variant in atopic or non-atopic asthmatic children. These suggest that IL-13 may oberate through mechanisms other than those that are calssicaly implicated in Th2 cell-induced immune reactions. Detection of the variant in small number of normal children is not explained in this study but we suggest that it is either a predictive marker for asthma or it may be present in certain incidence of children of our area. |
