Abstract Aim of the work To represent a comprehensive study of different new trends of management of gallstones other than the conventional cholecystectomy in a comparative view. This essay represents different options regarding gallstone disease namely etiology, diagnosis and different therapeutic trends especially the most recent aiming at approaching a conclusive idea about gallstone disease. Summary 1- the high recurrence rate of gallstones after all these newer forms of treatments, even with maintenance oral bile acid therapy, has made removal of gallbladder to be the treatment of choice in majority of instances: A- Chemical chleceystectomy that lead to complete obliteration of the gallbladder within 12-16 weeks was also described. B- The efforts reduce chleceystectomy to its least invasive form has led to the recent development of laparoscopic chleceystectomy. C- The value of laparoscopic chleceystectomy is based on the good cosmetic results, rapid resolution of postoperative pain and the reduction of hospitalization days with the ability to return to work soon after surgery. So many surgeons have considered laparoscopic chleceystectomy to most patients to whom chleceystectomy is indicated. D- Time and prospective clinical trials will determine the role of all previous modern trends in the management of gallstones. |
