Abstract Aim of the work Because the lumbar spinal canal stenosis is treatable, and its diagnosis must always be considered in elderly patients with leg pain of a sciatic or neurogenic nature, this thesis aims at evaluating of decompression operation for lumbar spinal canal stenosis in EL-Minia university hospital. Pathology, classification, clinical picture and various modalities of investigations will also be discussed. Conclusion Overall, 50 % of the patients had an excellent result, 30% a good result, 10% a fair result and 10% a poor result. Eight of 10 patients has=d improvement in their intermittent neurogenic claudication, but symptoms unchanged in two patients with degenerative spinal stenosis as a result of the irreversible damage of the neurological structures due to long duration of symptoms. Decompression laminectomy is a very satisfactory operation, and the few number of fair results is due to long standing cases with irreversible damage of the neurological structures. To obtain excellent results, complete decompression, firm internal fixation preferably by pedicle screws and sufficient autogenous bone graft, are necessary. In general, the results of surgical interventionfor these patients are very gratifying. |
