Abstract Maize, like other cultivated crops, is subjected to a number of diseases, which reduce both yield and quality. during the last few years the corn common smut became one of the most destructive diseases (El-Khateeb et al. , 1984 and Gazar, 1984a) Identification studies proved that the corn common smut is caused by U. maydis (DC.)cda. Many habloid and solopathogenic lines of U. maydis were isolated from some maize cvs of different susceptibility degrees to common smut. The isolates u-9 and u-10 were highly virulent. While u-4 was the weakly one. The isolated biotypes of U. maydis were differentiated to 10 groups according to their morphological charecters. Growth of these biotypes on some bacteriological media was tested. |
