Abstract The harderian gland is a compound tubulo-alveolar gland located around the posterior part of the eye ball in the nasal side of the orbit in the majority of land vertebrates. In rabbits, the gland is composed of 2 lobes: a small dorsal white lobe and a large ventral pink lobe. Both lobes produce lipoidal secretions. The white has relatively narrow lumina as compared to those in the pink lobe. Numerous lipid vacuoles are present in the epithelial cells of both lobes, however, they are fewer and larger in the pink lobe. Biochemically, the pink lobe has a higher lipid content than that in white lobe, on the contrary, the white lobe contains more proteins than the pink lobe. |
