Abstract

In this research attempts were made to affect anodic
oxidation of direct dye in an electrochemical reactor as
a new technique for treating and decolorizing textile
-wastewater.
Lead spheres were used as anode and stainless steel sheet as a cathode. The reactor which was a rectangular plexyglass
VDDI.ainar was zNto trio ’halves &y- means of a FVC porous
diaphragm, Na 2 SO 4 was used as a supporting electrolyte in both
anode and cathode compartments.
A regulated D.C. power supply was used as a source of
current and dye solution was continuously introduced to the
electrochemical reactor from the storage tank by means of pump.
1 bypass was used to regulate dye solution flow rate to the reactor
During each run, the contents of anode compartment were
a lyzed spectrophotometrkcally at intervals until complete
decolorization occurs. Variables were: initial dye concentration,
solution flow rate, anode area (Number of lead spheres) and pas¬ *134 current.
It was found that in all cases the rate of dye removal
imereases with increasing the cell current and time of anodic
oxidation.
