Abstract

This ~hesis is concerned withcontainer trans~ort as a door-
to-door transport system.
A review of the container system experiences and a study
qf the specific handicaps for containerisation in developing
countries-particularly Egypt-are given. Various critical aspects
affecting the demand of containerisation, the inland transport
system needed, and the equipment of container terminals are
investigated. A comparative study of the area required, for
different types of handling systems in the Port of Alexandria
is performed. A layout of the terminal for each handling system
is introduced in this stndy which is planned to meet the requir-
ements of the year 1985. In addition, an example for planning
.a rail~ container terminal is given. Also the movement of cont-
ainers in tLe Port of Alexandria to deteJ’flline dwell time and
container turn round is studieu.
The thesis is composed of seven Chapters J
In Chapter I,. a general introduction of the su~)ject and the goal
of research is given
In Chapter 11, a general stu.dy of the characteristic, sizes,
types anri shapes of ~he container - as a transport unit - is
introduced.
Chapter III includes a study of various handling equipment
and systems required for sea and inland container terminals.
Chapter IV is devoted to study the planning principles of
the transportation infrastructure as well as the factors affect-
ing plauning of the propel’ handling installations and control
systems in a sea container terminal. A comparative study for
planning handling systems in the Pori of Alexan~ria to meet
the re~uirements of the year 1985, is introduc~d. i layout of
the terminal s of various handling systems is propo sed.
Chapter V is devoted to study the special infrastructure
arrangement in a railway container terminal. An example for
planuing a railway container terminal is introduced.
Chapter VI includes a study of the containerisation develop-
• ment and handicaps in Egypt. A study of the movement of contain-
ers in the Port of Alexandria to determine dwell time and cont-
ainer turn round is introduced.
Chapter VII includes a summary dnd recommendation.
