Abstract The present work is divided into four main parts. The nature of the flow in labyrinth seals for the case when the flow is steady laminar and incompressible is treated in the first part. The flow is assumed axisym¬metric and the size of the labyrinth cavity is small by comparison to the size of the shaft diameter enclosed by the annular cavity. The flow patterns and the pres¬sure distributions within the labyrinths are obtained for different geometrical configurations of the laby¬rinth in the absence of an imposed axial leakage velo¬city. Nine configurations were considered, the first three when the labyrinth casing or gland is grooved circumferentially with height to pitch ratios of6=0.5, 1.0 and 2.0.The second family when the shaft is grooved circumferentially with different values of height to pitch ratios. A third group of labyrinths is when the shaft is stepped with the same height to pitch ratios considered as above. The second part studies the effect of the geometri-’ cal shape of labyrinth sealing on the amount of leakage losses through turbomachines. Combinations of labyrinth |
