Abstract This research is aiming at investigating the technical & economical feasibility of adding chemical coagulants to improve the efficiency of the primary treatment step and determine the possibility of using enhanced primary treatment instead of secondary treatment in small villages and towns in Egypt which suffer the lack of adequate funds and trained personnel needed for secondary treatment plants. This research work includes these stages :*FIRST STAGE :- In this stage focus was directed to conduct laboratory studies to determine the effect of every type avai lable of chemical coagulant in the removal efficiency of BOD & TSS . *SECONo STAGE In which chemical providing optimum removal efficiency was zenein to determine the used in the fullscale plant of appropriate dosage for best removal efficiency . *THIRo STAGE:- Experiments were conducted on piolt scale tube settlers model to study the effect of adding chemical coagulants in improving the BOD and TSS removal efficiency. The study conclusions are as follows :- 1- Ferric chloride is the best chemical with respect to treatment efficiency and cost with max. R.R. obtained for BOO & TSS are 62% & 91% respectively. 2- Polymers have little effect in improving the removal efficiency of pollutants. 3- There is increase in removal ratio by an average of 20% for BOO when ferric chloride was added in the tube settler at a dosing range from 20-30 p.p.m. |
