Abstract Preparation of uranium alloys and the investigation of the metallurgical behaviour of dilute U—alloys is of practical and fundamental importance in the field of metallic fuel elements. A study dealing with the preparation of some U—Z alloys (6,2, and 0.5 wt.% Zr) and an U—Al alloy (0.5 wt.% Al) was undertaken. The effects of heat treatment on the structure and, some mechanical and physical propertLo2 of some dilute alloys (U-300 ppm Si, U-350 ppm Al and U-1000 ppm C) were investigated. Structure examination of U and U—alloys was achieved by metallography and x-ray diffraction. The hardness and aensity were,*also, measured. Preparation of U—Zr alloys was carried out at a temperature below the melting point of Zr, depending on the dissolution of Zr in molten U and the formation of master alloys with melting points lower than that of Zr, while the preparation of U--A1 alloy depended on melting. Evacuated sealed silica tubes and alumina crucibles were used for alloying. The silica tubes were broken during alloy preparation in both cases |
