Abstract
The increasing use of vancomycin to control of MRSA and Enterococci infections lead to the emergence and widespread of vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE). The fear from the emergence of S. aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin came from reality with the reports of S. aureus with reduced susceptibility and even resistance to vancomycin. The current study aimed to evaluate the susceptibility of local nosocomial isolates to determine the presence of S. aureus with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin, the possible mechanism of resistance and possible relatedness among these isolates. A 957 clinical samples from nosocomial infections were collected from different departments, units and centers of Mansoura University Hospitals over a 6 months from March, 2004 till September, 2004. Clinical samples comprised from 151 blood samples, 149 sputum samples, 122 urine samples, 17 stool samples and 82 body fluids samples (18 ascetic fluid, 5 pleural fluids, 3 CSF and 56 fluid from surgical drains), 9 nasal swabs, 224 surgical wounds swabs, 3 vaginal swabs, 12 tracheostomy swabs, 62 throat swabs, 14 ear swabs, 8 tongue swabs, 2 eye swabs, 22 ulcers swabs, and 80 swabs from devices (9 from central vein catheter, 59 from tubes and 12 from endotracheal aspirates.
