Abstract In this work the author aimes at introducing the archimedean screw as a new effective equipment for skimming petroleum crude oil spills from the surface of water. Both mathematical treatment and experimentation were carried out to give clear relationships between the various variable parameters such as the screw diameter angle of inclination oil film thickness and the screw discharge and the oil percentage. chapter 1 is devoted to show to what extent oil pollution affects environment In chapter 2 causes of oil pollution and the existing or proposed combating methods are discussed. Also in thid chapter various existing methods of containing and removing oil spills are illustrated showing the advantages and disadvantages of each. In chapter 3 reasons of selecting the archimedean screw to skim oil from the water surface are given. Chapter 4 is devoted to the derivation of mathematical formulas giving the screw discharge and the oil percentage in terms of the affecting variables.computer programs were made to print tables giving solutions of the mathematical formulas for a wide range of the variables involved. |
