Abstract Aim of the work To determine the relation of lipid, lipoproteins (HDL-C & LDL-C) and Apo lipoproteins (Apo-B & Apo A-1) to the presence, the extent and the degree of severity of CAD. Conclusion The present study indicated inverse relation of HDL-C with extent and severity of CAD in the patients with low total serum cholesterol. The total cholesterol/ HDL-C ratio constitutes a more convenient & efficient profile because it reflects the joint effect of the 2-way traffic of cholesterol entering and leaving the tissues. The serum level of Apo A-1 is a better marker for the presence of CAD than HDL-C and a normal Apo A-1 can provide an argument against pharmacological therapy inspite of decreased level of HDL-C. The serum level of Apo B is a better marker for the presence, extent and severity of CAD. The patients with elevated serum level of Apo B inspite of normal LDL-C level are candidate for drug therapy. So, it is concluded that assessment of serum level of HDL-C, Apo A-1 and Apo B become very essential in the risk stratification and management of dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. |
