Abstract

Aim of the work
Aim of the present study is to evaluate the pattern of pulmonary venous flow in rheumatic mitral stenosis and effect of PBMV on change in pulmonary venous waves as a result of dilatation of the stenotic valve and reduction in left atrial pressure as well as transmitral pressure gradients.
Also, studying the immediate effect of balloon dilatation in reducing the pulmonary artery pressure resulting from successful increase in mitral valve area.
Conclusion
Rheumatic mitral valve stenosis is disease affecting left ventricular filling and leads to elevation of left atrial pressure which leads to alteration of normal pulmonary venous and arterial flows and worsens the patient’s symptoms.
PBMV is relatively new technique that has proven to be effective in non surgical relief of mitral valve obstruction and symptoms of mitral stenosis.
For better results, patient selection should be carefully done as regards to age of patient, pliability and score of MS and degree of pulmonary hypertension.
PBMV resulted in restoration venous flow near to normal and reduction in lest atrial pressure with subsequent regression of pulmonary hypertension.
There was no superiority of using either single or double balloon dilatation as results of both were nearly similar as there was no statistical difference in between.
