Abstract
The present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical performance and success rate of the chairside fabricated distal shoe space maintainer appliance.
The study was performed on a sample of 30 children, whose age range was 5-5½ years old, selected from the dental clinic of the Pediatric Dentistry Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University. Thirty chairside fabricated distal shoe space maintainer appliances were placed for the patients. Cases were followed for a 6-9 month period, and the study was ended when the first permanent molar had erupted.
The appliance placed consisted of: a) an appliance retainer which was either a stainless steel band, or crown; b) a female part (u-shaped tube) which was welded to the retainer; c) a male part (u-shaped wire) with a blade that was inserted mesial to the first permanent molar. After the primary second molar was extracted the appliance parts were assembled and the blade was inserted in the distal socket of the distal root of the extracted tooth. An impression was made in the beginning and end of the study to construct a study model from which changes in the space was measured. This was aided by standardized periapical radiographs also, to measure any changes in the mesiodistal length of the appliance during its service.
