Abstract Schistosomiasis is the most prevalent cause of liver fibrosis in many developing countries. Although there are many disease manifestations in schistosomiasis, almost all morbidity and mortality is 2ry to Symmers’ PPF of the liver and subsequent portal hypertension and oesophageal varices. There are 3 main ways to attack the problem of SHF .-Cl} Stopping the antigenic stimulus by specific chemotherapy that leads to cessation of egg laying by adult female worms. C23 Inhibition of the host immune response by certain drugs and procedures. C3} Modulation of collagen metabolism using certain agents that decrease collagen synthesis and maturation and/or enhance collagen resorption. Several methods have been used to follow up the impact of potential antifibrotic agents on disease morbidity in general and dynamics of hepatic fibrosis in particular. These include: I-. Biochemical Disease Markers: -bile acids. -CT markers. II- Abdominal Ultrasonography.- which can detect: 1) alterations in liver size: enlargement in early disease, shrinkage in late |
