Abstract


Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that causes congenital or acquired infections in man. Acquired ections are usually subclinical. The incidence of infection fers according to localities, age and immunity of the sub—
It is higher in aduluts than children. In immunocompromised patients, toxoplasmosis may be a serious infection sing encephalitis, myositis or eye lesions.
The aim of this study is to determine the frequeucy of xoplasmosis in immunocompromised children up to 14 years 0 are given chemotherapy for treatment of lymphoma said acute ukemia.
A total number of 85 cases were collected from Oncology it of Pediatric Department, Am Shams University and Cancer stitute, Cairo University. They were divided into 5 groups.
roup I consisted of 10 children of both sexes aging from 2 onth to 14 years and suffering from acute leukemia or lymhoma prior to starting chernotherapy. Group II consi.cted of O children under chemotherapy for variable periods. Group III onsisted of 22 mothers of some of the above mentioned children. roup IV onsisted of 3 children with symptoms and signs su.ggstive of toxoplasmosis. Group V consisted of 10 healthy infant d children of same age and sex of group I and II. A sheet as formulated to collect relevant data from each child. All the above groups are screened serologically by the IFAT .
