Abstract Methanol is the alcohol with the simplest structure but one most likely to cause serious human toxicity. It is a widely used commercial, industrial, and marine solvent in paints and photocopying fluid. However, its wide spread industrial use account for the fact that large volumes may be obtained commonly resulting in epidemic outbreaks of methanol poisoning. The aim of this work was to study patients with acute methanol intoxication as regards severity of clinical manifestations, laboratory investigations and management and to correlate these with the prognosis and outcome. This study was conducted on twenty patients with acute methanol intoxication admitted to Alexandria Poison Center and Critical Medicine Department at Alexandria Main University Hospital during four months period (February - May) in the year 2001. All patients were interviewed and examined to fill a specially designed sheet (Appendix 1) as regards; history and circumstantial evidence, clinical examination, laboratory investigations (routine investigations, arterial blood gases and serum formate levels) and computed tomography of the brain.
