Abstract

Anal incontinence is a highly distressing, and disabling condition that has a highly negative impact on the affected individuals affecting their quality of life and their tendency to achieve.
It is defined as involuntary excretion of stools at inappropriate time or in an inappropriate place, occurring more than twice a month.
It has an under estimated global prevalence rate reaching about 5 %, under estimation is usually due to embarrassment, delay in seeking medical advice on the assumption that it is a normal sequelae after vaginal delivery in developing areas, and the lack of proper statistical analyses in many areas allover the world.
Different grading and scoring systems were developed to assess the degree and severity of the condition and its effects on the quality of life as the condition has wide range of grades and scores. This assessment is not just a mere categorization, but it is an important guide in decision making and proper management planning in anal incontinence, along with assessment of the success of the chosen modality, and also aids follow up and prognosis along with determination of the need of further intervention
