Summary
Surgery has major impact on patient life and anxiety associated with such procedure is the most common problem of patient; therefore the current study was carried out to determine if there were differences in anxiety levels, between two different group of patients having renal calculi and scheduled for removing this calculi through two different approaches. Group I those patients with open nephrolithotomy and group II those patients with percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The following tools were utilized for data collection, a designed interview questionnaire sheet including demographic. data; and anxiety scale developed by (Snaith & Zigmed, 1994). The study was carried out at the urology department of Shebin El- Kom Menoufiya University Hospital as well as at the Teaching Hospital. Chi - Square and t test were used for treatment of data. A probability of 0.05 was adopted as the level of significance.
The study findings indicated that subjects age ranged between 20 to 60 years; majority of subjects in the two studied groups were males 76.7%, 56.7% respectively; they fell in the category of age group 40-60 yr; as well as almost half of both groups are married; 86.7% ,90.0% respectively.
Highly statistical significant difference regarding patients health status and anxiety pre- postoperatively among those who had history of hypertension (30.0%, 36.7%) history of diabetes, (6.7, 10.0%) previous surgery (56.7% 40.0%), history of renal problem (50.0%, 40.0%) history of digestion problem (6.7%, 70.0%) respectively. A significant difference was found between the two groups preoperatively (T= 6.416, P=.000).
Highly statistical significant difference regarding Patient’s health status and anxiety pre postoperatively among group 1 (patients were undergoing open nephrolithotomy surgery) those who had history of hypertension (X2= 10.159 , P=0.01), diabetes (X2= 19.286, P= 00.0) heart disease (X2= 14.483, P=.000) and history of renal calculi was evident at (X2= 26.267, P=.000).
Highly statistical significant difference regarding patient’s health status and anxiety pre-postoperatively among group II (patients were undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy) those who had history of hypertension (X2= 19.286, P=.000), history of renal problem (X2= 30.000, P=.000). while statistical significant among those with history of heart problem (X2= 3.810, P=0.51)
No significant difference between the two studied groups postoperatively (t=4.065, P<0.000).
Significant relationship was found at 0.01 level in groups II (those patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy) regarding pre and postoperative anxiety. No significant relationship was found in group 1 regarding prepostoperatively anxiety (P=.163).
